This community garden started in 1978, right below the Odyssey restaurant in the San Fernando Valley. One of the first gardeners nicknamed the place “the salad bowl garden,” and the name stuck.
Our goals are to encourage individuals in the community to develop self-sufficiency and healthy living through a community garden and educating them about gardening skills. In 2024 we started a new community area to host volunteers, workshops and events. We hope this new space will bring a new wave of gardeners to learn and share their knowledge with each other.
The garden occupies a 1.7-acre parcel on 16003 Rinaldi Street, Granada Hills, CA 91344. There are 139 plots. One plot is approximately 30’ x 10’ or 300 sq ft. We focus on organic vegetable gardening.
• We have street parking along both sides of Rinaldi Street, Gaviota Avenue and Gaynor Avenue.
• We have an Annual Membership per plot that is due by January 31st and there is a Plot Acquisition Fee per plot for New Gardeners and to Existing Gardeners acquiring additional plots.
• We have plots leased by households, communal plots with garden boxes with herbs, flowers & seasonal crops, communal trees such as lemon, avocado, & pomegranate and more to come
